In ancient time, the source of all, the elemental powers, were sealed away for fear that they'll destroy the world. But as a result, losing the elemental powers as its nourishment, the world began to wither.
To save the world from this crisis, warriors known as "Adepts", those who wield Psynergy, unleashed the elemental powers into the world again.
However, the surpressed elemental powers were so great that they basically aroused a recreation of heaven and earth. Natural disasters occur all over the world. Plus the earth crust displacements, the continents aren't the same anymore.
Those who witnessed the moment this great energy pouring from the sky called it the "Golden Sun".
Hmm. As I thought, then. If you're going to have two games set in the same universe, there has to be a lot of change to it for any third game in the same setting.

Q: What's the meaning of the subtitle, Dark Dawn?
Hiroyuki: The subtitle tells the core of the story. You'll understand what it means as the story goes on.
Shuugo: "darkness" and "dawn" seems opposite. You can consider it as darkness and light, destruction and revival.
This reading of the title seems to imply that the Wise One's special gambit involved a sacrifice, like making the Golden Sun's rise go "wrong" slightly. Perhaps the intention of the lighthouses is to give the full power of the GS to someone worthy of it, to save whatever is left after letting the sealing go on for even longer than we saw. But because someone unworthy stood on Aleph, the Wise One had to reduce the power that was to be released. The dimensional anomalies we've seen in the previews so far seem to imply that this very act has ruptured the universe or caused something else that's just as extreme. Honestly, it seems that with friends like the Wise One, who needs enemies? There's just test after test after test placed in front of the heroes. But I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to prevent someone like Alex from becoming a god...

Q: Will there be two games for this story?
Hiroyuki: No. This time it's one game. However, we'll try to bring you the enjoyment of imagining what the world will be like after the story ends.
Now this is a little less heartening. It might just be the translation of the dialogue here, but I'm not thinking there'll be any fourth game in the works, at least not soon, unless GSDD does spectacularly.
